AR Aeolis, Cyme Tetradrachm 2nd Cent. B.C. (36mm, 16.80 gm, 12h). O: Head of the Amazon Cyme right, her hair bound with a taenia. Oakley 62 (unlisted dies). BMC 78-9. SNG von Aulock 1640. R: KYMAIΩN, horse standing to right, its left foreleg raised, a one-handled cup below; ΣEYΘHΣ in exergue; all within laurel wreath. G: Well centered on an immense, round flan and struck from lovely dies. Superb metal quality. From the Kim Werner Collection. Acquired from Davisson's Ltd. on 28 November, 1988. Good Extremely Fine. It appears to be a very nice coin, although the Heritage photo leaves something to be desired. Overexposed.

Yes, I plan to scan it when I have received it. I like the style of the portrait of Cyme. The hint of a smile appeals to me and is reminiscent of archaic Greek and Etruscan coinage. I've never seen an example of this obverse before, so the die must be at least uncommon, if not rare. -h

You're right, Clay, I don't think I've ever seen one of these with that classic Greek smile. And both sides have great style.

I can't find an obverse like this on either coinarchives.com or acsearch.com, Jim. I don't have a copy of either BMC or SNG von Aulock so I can't look it up. -c
