Richard II AD 1377 to 99 Penny of York
Richard II Early Type I Penny of York.
Obv: Crowned bust facing. Cross on breast
+(RI)CARDVSxxREXxxAnGLIE (Double Saltire Stops)
Rev: Long Cross quartered with trefoil of pellets - Quatrefoil in centre.
(x CIVI)/TAS/EBOR/ACI - Saltire before Civi ?.
Mint York.
Previously attributed by me to Edward III but re-examination of the
Obverse legend shows the lower third of the letter C before A rather than the W which would
have been in that position had it been Edwardus.
Also the straight band to the Crown is particularly indicative of a coin of Richard.
Purvey Type IA3 or 4 North 1329 - SCBC 1690
