PhokisTriobol

hieron

AR Phokis. Federal coinage. Triobol, 445-420 BC. ( 2.88 g.) O: Frontal bull’s head, the hair in ringlets and a pellet inside each ringlet. Dies not in Williams but see O.170 for a similar obverse style. For the reverse see BCD Peloponnesos 1407. If this coin is not from the same hand then it must surely be contemporary. Williams post 246. R: Diademed head of Artemis r. in superb style, the hair taken into a queue at the back of the head. The eye is profiled. F-O-K-I, clockwise from top l., the K probably reversed and the I sideways and higher up from the corner of the incuse. G: “An enchantingly beautiful coin. Very lightly toned and extremely fine or better.” S: NAC 55, lot 255 10/7/10, ex. BCD collection

Thanks, guys. This little beauty takes a nice picture. I'll let you know how it looks in hand in a couple of weeks. It certainly has nice celator artistry on both sides. -h

Yes, Mark. This is a beauty. The picture doesn't quite do it justice. The bull's nose is fully on the flan and is quite sharp. The appearance of porosity in the photo is exaggerated. It doesn't have mirror luster, but it is somewhat lustrous. The style of the reverse is charming. All together it's not a bad little coin. -c
