What a pedigree! Superb coin! Too bad it looks like someone along the way decided to scrub the patina...

Hi Jeff and Mark. I don't think anyone scrub, is just the way the patina has formed around the high points (?). Very nice, has Mike one of these already? I assume so. Alex

I'm definitely not faulting the coin in any way, but to my eye the way the darker patina traces around the devices suggests that some sort of light cleaning or handling wear has occurred. Again, this isn't a fault, only an observation. You couldn't ask for a better pedigree or detail in the devices.

Thanks for the compliments. I am lucky to have been able to acquire this piece.

While I have not actually seen the coin as yet, as per EJW, there is no problem with the patina. It has dark toning typical of a coin from an old collection. The darker areas around the figures are mostly just a darker toning and there are some light deposits, particularly around the head of the horse and rider. Everything is completely natural, and there has been no cleaning or scrubbing of the coin.

I have also seen the photo of the coin in the Leu 61 catalog, and the toning is a little more uniform there. I think the photos above were taken with high intensity lighting, which probably helps accentuate the contrast.
