AELIUS (under HADRIAN). Æ As. Rome, 137 AD. Obv. AELIVS CAESAR Bare head right Rev. SALVS TR POT COS II SC Salus seated left on chair, feeding from patera serpent arising from altar. C. 45 (8F) Nice untouched natural patina with earthern deposits. Sharp strike, exceptional portrait. The uneven and quite thin edge make this coin an As rather than a Dupondius. This implies that both Asses and Dupondii were issued for the Salus reverse type (thanks Curtis). Found in Spain.

Nice coin!

 

On what basis do you call it a dupondius rather than an As? The uneven edge with numerous splits and cracks makes me suspect copper rather than orichalcum.

You're absolutely right. The weight and the edge make it quite surely an As; I instinctively described it as a Dupondius, based on my other ex made of orichalcum (seen due to the Tiber patina).

So this means that both Asses and Dupondii were issued for the Salus type. This makes me another very good reason to keep the 2 coins with a same reverse!
