Constantine Portrait Comparison

Portraits of Constantine are more lifelike and less idealized from the Constantinoplis mint where the celator is more likely to have actually seen Constantine.

Beautiful group of coins. Are these new additions? Glad to see you back on the site. I have missed seeing your new additions, which are always amazing. Hope you have been able to add some other new ones.

Actually the Constantinopolis 35 bust (the last one in the picture) is idealized, compare it with the slightly earlier Constantinopolis 30 bust, which shows Constantine with a thicker neck. He was even nicknamed "bull-neck" The later 35 bust is a re-inventing of his persona- his features have softened, his neck is thinner and his hair is longer. Constantine undergoes an amazing physical transformation, perhaps symbolizing his spiritual transformation.
