PHILIP II. AR Antoninianus of Rome. Struck A.D.248. Obverse: IMP PHILIPPVS AVG. Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip II facing right, seen from behind. Reverse: SAECVLARES AVGG. Goat walking left; in exergue, III (officina 3). RIC IV iii : 224 SCARCE This coin is one of a series of coins struck by Philip I and Philip II in A.D.248 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of Rome. Many of these coins depict the various animals, brought from all over the Empire, which were displayed in the arena during the games celebrating this event.
