Edward III 4th Coinage Series C Half Groat.
Obv:- Crowned bust facing within tressure of arches. Top arches not fleured
Initial Mark = Cross 1.
Legend:- +EDWARDVS o REX o ANGLI Z FRAN'
Rev:- Long cross pattee dividing legend within two
concentric circles quartered with trefoil of pellets.
Legend:- +POS / VIDEV/ ADIVT/ OREM-no stops.
LON/ DON/ CIVI/ TAS.
Closed E & C with M broken.
Series C Half Groat variety not listed in L.A.
Lawrence's 'The Coinage of Edward III from 1351' (LAL).
The unusual features of this coin are as follows:-
The Obverse legend is identical to LAL Series B No 5
but with closed E (Series C) and no Annulet
(o) stops after REX.
LAL Series C (d) No 7 notes 'Annulets missing in places' -
so this feature is known to occur.
The reverse without stops and with a broken M is similar to
LAL Series C(b) No 8 but with unbarred A's.
This Series C Variety is not listed by LAL
nor does it occur in the Doubleday Sale Catalogue
