AR Maximinus I Denarius 235-238 A.D. (2.01g) O: MAXIMINUS PIUS AUG GERM; Laur.dr.bust r.; RIC IVii, 19D, page141; C 37 R: PAX AUGUSTI; Pax stg l. hldg an olive branch and transverse scepter G: Mint State, worn reverse die. Superb later portrait. “An excellent example of Maximinus’ progressive Acromegaly. Note the mandibular enlargement, large nose, frontal protuberance and frontal bossing. He undoubtedly had a pituitary adenoma causing gigantism and acromegaly. It is doubtful he would have lived long after this portrait and he would have died of cardiopulmonary complications of his Acromegaly.CD” S: Ancient Auction House eBay auction 6/21/02
