Roma_Orbis

MARCUS AURELIUS. Æ Dupondius. Rome, 171/172 AD. Obv. M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXV Radiated head right Rev. IMP VI COS III SC Victory standing right, left foot on helmet, inscribing VIC GER on shield set on the trunk of a palm-tree. Cohen 273 Military type commemorating the victory over the Germanic tribes after a difficult campaign. Germanic people of central and northern Europe began to move from the Elbe and Vistula, causing pressure on the Marcomanni, Quadi, Yaziges, who in turn were forced to advance into Roman territory about 166 AD. Note the first noteworthy decay in the imperial bronze issues, with truncated flans, and now sometimes flat and simplified engraving.
