Kyrene, Cyrenaica (Ptolemy II Euergetes Reign)

Kyrene, Cyrenaica [Ptolemy II Euergetes Reign (possibly); 285-246 BC.] AE 22 Obv: Diademed head of Ptolemy Soter with aegis around neck, facing right; dotted circular border; centering hole. Rev: Bust of Libya, facing right; cornucopia below chin; PTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ legend surrounding & within dotted circular border. Attribution: cf. Svoronos 871; cf. SNG Cop 442-444 Provenance: private sale Weight: 6.71 gm. Maximal Diameter: 21.92 mm. Axis: 11 Note: A similiar plate example from Buttery "Cyrene Final Reports (Vol. VI)" assigns this issue to the Group II - Module B type, which are more heavily represented during Ptolemy III (Euergetes) reign. However, Ptolemy Soter's representation on this coin is uncharacteristic of the typical dies used in this series and has facial features close to those represented in the coinage of Magas during his brief period of autonomous reign suggesting that this issue might be closer to Ptolemy II Euergetes reign (see here - http://www.ancients.info/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/5802).
