AR Shekel Obv: Melquart holding drawn bow & riding hippocamp, facing right; dolphin below stylized waves; raised circular decorative border. Rev: Owl standing right, facing head; crook and flail over shoulder, date year mark 10 (338/7 BC) to right; raised circular decorative border. Attribution: Betlyon 37, n.112; BMC 13; SNG Cop. - Provenance: ex. Harlan J. Berk, MB151 (#209), 11.1.06 Weight: 8.20 gm Maximal Diameter: 19.5 mm Axis: 12 Note: Azemilcus, king of Tyre, was serving in the Persian fleet under Autophradates at the time when Alexander arrived at Tyre (c.334 BC). He was in the city when it was finally taken after a seven-month seige by Alexander (Arrian, ii. 15, 24.). Quintus Curtius (4.2.10-12) writes that at the time of Tyre's fall to Alexander, a Carthaginian delegation is in Tyre to celebrate the annual festival of Melkart-Heracles. Azemilcus, the chief magistrates and the Carthaginian embassy take refuge in the temple of Heracles. To them Alexander grants full pardon but he severely punishes the people of Tyre. Some thirty thousand are sold into slavery, and two thousand Tyrians are nailed to crosses along a great stretch of the shore. GK245

That is a fantastic coin. Everything about it is great. Wonderful obverse.

I had just seen one a few days ago and was going to point it out to you. But I thought I shouldn't tempt you after all your other recent purchases.

Seems you were well into the hunt already.

One of your top 3 IMO.

Cool coin.

Isn't year 10 338/7?...

And a didrachm or a shekel? Not dishekel I fear...prove me wrong :)

You need a copy of Betlyon - I have a softcopy somewhere...

Yeah, I don't know Alex. I thought shekel, too, but given the reputation of HJB I thought maybe they knew something I didn't. Maybe they conflated dishekel and didrachm in their listing? Corrected to reflect your suggestions...and you're right, I do need a copy of Betlyon. :)

Thanks for the kind words, Mark. One more hippocamp will be posted...a pleasant surprise to me given my relatively pitiful bid. The problem with this coin season is the quality and types that are hitting the market. This has been the best crop (for my interests) in quite some time. Worried I won't see them again.
