HADRIAN. Æ As. Rome, 134-138 (135?) AD. Obv. HADRIANVS AVG COS III PP Laureated head right Rev. SC Victoria-Nemesis standing right, holding a branch (and in an apotropaic gesture, lifting her peplos to spit on her breast?). C. 1373 (6F) Rarely represented divinity, 'Nemesis, winged balancer of life, dark-faced goddess, daughter of Justice', wrote the poet Mesomedes, Hadrian's freedman, where he addressed her, and mentioned her "adamantine bridles" that restrain "the frivolous insolences of mortals.
