Faustina II, daughter of Antoninus Pius and wife of Marcus Aurelius. Augusta, A.D. 147-175. Æ medallion (51.20 g). Rome, A.D. 147-150. FAVSTINAE AVG PII AVG FIL, draped bust left / Venus standing facing, holding long sceptre in right hand and apple in her raised left hand; Cupid standing right atop garlanded and panelled cippus in left field, holding arrow in right hand and unstrung bow in left hand; pair of doves perched on ornate basin on columnate stand in right field; left dove drinking, right dove looking at Venus. Gnecchi II pg. 40, 12 and pl. 67, 7/10 (obv./rev.); Strack -; Banti 151; Toynbee -; Dressel -; BMCREM -; MRV -; MFA-; Froehner -; Cohen 290. Good VF, black surfaces with coppery highlights, minor hairline flan crack. Very rare. Ex Triton VIII (11 January 2005), 1148. Realized USD 10,500 on an estimate of USD 10,000.
