Clacton Stater

Vepcorf

Clacton Type 2. Pale gold plate on silver core Spink 27 Copy around 50BC. It is rare for British produced staters to be plated on non base metal cores. I have been told only a few are known and all relate to the Clacton series. Found 20/08/07

It looks that way. The coin is very underweight at 4.5 gm should be about 6 gm. It looks like a gold foil coating but instead of a bronze core it is an elctrum inner which i guess if it was a counterfeit would still fool someone if it was cut into to test it. Another theory is that it could have been an official issue just that they were very short of gold. I would guess a counterfiet mixed in with allot of true coins it would be hard to spot without weighing every one. I also think many were used as offerings as no silver coins come up on these sites and to keep losing single gold coins is very rare in any historic age.
